Using handmade stained glass mosaic and artistic expression to address and heal from environmental trauma
Last summer, our teen art apprentices undertook one of the most ambitious and meaningful projects in the history of our art program. In partnership with Ignition Community Glass and After School Matters, they created stunningly beautiful and emotionally stirring glass mosaic peace benches. The purpose of this comprehensive, collaborative project was not only to teach our young artists concept planning, sketching, glass blowing, painting, cutting, arranging, woodworking and installation. In addition, it enabled them how to discuss and develop a visual narrative to help them address and communicate the trauma they feel due to the violence, poverty, and systemic racism they face in their marginalized communities. Made possible by our Partnership for Safe and Peaceful Communities grant award.
